Rehabilitation Psychology is a specific expertise area within the field of Psychology. Additionally, neurorehabilitation is a subspecialty within this field.
Rehabilitation Psychologists are specialty-trained to assist individuals manage recovery from injuries, or adjust to chronic illness, or disability. The goal is to achieve optimal functioning in a person’s emotional, cognitive, physical, and social abilities. Common diagnoses Rehabilitation Psychologists work with include: Spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, neurodegenerative disorders, amputation, neuromuscular disorders, cancer, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., intellectual disability, autism), impairments in sensory functioning (e.g., hearing loss, blindness, vision loss), burns and/or disfigurement; and impairments that may be compounded by cultural, educational and/or other disadvantages.
Our specific specialty is understanding, appreciating the complexities, and working with conditions affecting the brain and central nervous system, as well as complex medical illness.
